Appalachian Spring

Copland's 1944 ballet for Martha Graham, scored first for a 13-instrument ensemble and later as an orchestral suite. Its variations on the Shaker tune "Simple Gifts" won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Music and became a defining sound of American concert music.
